How to Transfer Primary Ownership of Google Search Console

Are you transitioning a property to or from your management? Here's how to transfer primary ownership of GSC.

Only verified owners can add and change user permissions.

Are you a verified owner? A verified owner has verified themselves through some sort of verification token (HTML page or tag, DNS record, or some other method).

You can't add another user as a verified owner, because they need to create a token associated with their Google account. If they follow the verification flow and give you the token, you can upload the token for them to verify their ownership.

  1. The new owner needs to create a verification token. (an HTML file for HTML file verification)
  2. The existing owner needs to upload the verification token for the new owner so they can verify their ownership
    1. Download the HTML verification file sent to you from the new owner
    2. Upload the HTML verification token. Choose the HTML file upload method on the verification details page for your site, and follow the instructions shown.
  3. Click User and Permission page
  4. Next to the property owners select the three dots. It will take you to the Webmaster Center where you can manage the property owners.
  5. To delete a user, select the More menu next to the user to delete and click Remove access.
  6. The change should take effect very quickly.
